Academic Classes
Reading
Being able to read is crucial for the development of children. By reading, kids can improve their language skills. KIND provides various programs and classes which nourish these skills such as phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. KIND establishes the building blocks to a solid foundation for understanding the reading basics of phonics, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
Writing
Writing is an indispensable skill that children need in order to communicate with the world around them. Children can use writing to improve performance in the classroom, cultivate emotional growth, and develop critical thinking skills. At KIND, we encourage our kids to become better writers by providing classes aimed towards communicating efficiently and expressing themselves creatively.
Math
Mathematics introduces children to concepts that are vital in everyday life. It provides opportunities for children to develop critical skills in problem solving and deductive/inductive reasoning. KIND math classes require children to look for patterns and use logical reasoning while also stimulating creativity and problem solving skills.
Creative Classes
Sewing
Learning to sew has numerous benefits. Sewing requires patience and dedication because the project may take a long time to complete. Sewing also develops better pattern identification and planning so that the finished product is what the sewer intended. At KIND, we hope that our kids will take this skill and enjoy and utilize it far into the future.
Art
Artistic expression is extremely important in the growth of children. Education in the arts helps children improve academically, improves motor skills, and builds confidence and focus. KIND celebrates art and provides a way for children to express themselves through art whether that be through painting, drawing, or crafts. KIND provides a way for students to understand and work through their emotions with art.
Dance
Several studies have shown that dancing has incredible effects on the mental health and attitudes of the people involved. People of all ages – especially kids – have been shown to be more confident in themselves after learning to dance and less ashamed of body imperfections. At KIND, we believe a well-rounded education is important for growing minds and bodies.
Life Experiences
Christianity
Spiritual growth is vital for building the foundation for the lives of our children. Through bible study and an integration of Christian morals and ethics in everything we do, we strive to help our kids live a Christ-like life.
Healthy Food Choices
Beyond the hot meals that we provide to our kids everyday, we also make sure to teach them about making better and healthier choices. Our kids learn about different foods and snacks that are available to them, and different ways of eating them. The hope is that our kids will want to make and eat a fun snack made with fruits and vegetables instead of immediately going for a bag of chips.
Gardening
Gardening goes hand in hand with our healthy food initiative. If children are choosing healthy foods, they should also know where those healthy foods from. KIND shows our kids how food is grown so that they have a better appreciation for food as well as the work it takes to grow them. Gardening is a lifelong skill that will follow them into adulthood and will guarantee that they can be able to grow their own food from home.
Emotional Development
Growing up is hard – understanding your emotions while you grow up can be even harder. KIND strives to help children do just that. The courses are designed to further emotional maturity and help process difficult emotions that children may be overwhelmed by. By nurturing patience, self-reliance, and empathy in children, we foster emotional maturity and healthy coping mechanisms.
Field Trips
In recent years, schools have cut-back on field trips. Some things cannot be learned while sitting in a classroom. At KIND, we believe that first-hand experience greatly benefits our kids’ lives. Through visits to various places like COSI, Coney Island, the Cincinnati Zoo, Cox Arboretum, the Ohio Caverns, and the Dayton Air Force museum, we are giving our children new experiences to open their eyes to new possibilities and the world around them.
Physical Activities
Team Building
KIND promotes activities that involve team building. Those activities require children to rely on each other to succeed for that task or game. Activities that encourage team building and team work are a great way to teach communications, leadership, and problem solving. They are also enable our kids to make friends and have fun!
Swimming
Swimming is a great way to cool down and beat the summer heat. Many kids in our community, though, have never had the opportunity to ever swim let alone get swimming lessons. At KIND, we want our kids to have fun at the pool, and teaching them how to swim is a life skill that will benefit them for years to come.
Soccer
Physical exercise is extremely important in the development of children, and soccer is no exception. Playing soccer allows our kids to be active while also improving their teamwork. By playing games, children learn to follow rules and strategize so that they may better succeed.
Services
1:9 Teacher to Student Ratio
Many teachers in public education show concern for the effectiveness of teaching when class sizes are too large. We at KIND believe that students learn best when working in smaller classes as they each get more attention from the teacher, and that the manageable class size will enable our teachers to teach their best. We strive to make sure our classes remain around 9 students per teacher, letting each and every student receive a more personalized education.
Homework Help
Many of the teachers that teach at KIND are also teachers at local schools. They see our kids every day and know what homework they are assigned. Students at KIND receive hands-on help with their homework from these teachers and volunteers every day.
Computers
In the growing age of technology, schools and businesses require just about everyone to have experience and skills in working on computers. KIND recognizes this, and makes computers available for our students. Some of our kids may not have computers at home, so having access to computers to be able to do research and use educational software is extremely valuable to their academic lives.
Transportation
One of the biggest concerns that parents have is finding transportation for their children to get to their activities. We solve this issue at KIND by providing transportation to and from KIND and also to special trips and events.
Hot Meals
Growing children eat a lot of food. At KIND, we know how important regular and substantial meals are for kids. Every day kids come to KIND, they know they will get a hot meal prepared by our amazing volunteers. Each year, we provide over 8000 meals.
Personal Hygiene
At KIND, we encourage our kids to put care into their personal hygiene. We teach them the importance of washing their hands and staying clean so that they are happier and healthier. In addition, thanks to donations, we have laundry equipment on site that enables us to help our kids clean their clothes while also teaching them how to do it. These kids go home with the skills and knowledge to keep themselves clean, and maybe even help out around the house.
HS ESL + Youth Career Services (High School)
Many families in our community speak English as a second language (ESL). During the summer, we hold High School ESL classes in partnership with local schools so that students in our community may find more success in their academic and future careers.
In partnership with Youth Career Services 365, KIND employs high schoolers to do work for the community. This partnership allows these kids to make money for themselves and their families while also giving them job experiences and making their community a better place.
